Students will get a chance to take admission twice a year in regular courses of universities and colleges of the country. UGC has allowed universities and colleges to take admission twice a year. University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman M Jagadeesh Kumar gave this information on Tuesday. This facility will start in higher education institutions from the academic year 2024-25. Kumar said that this decision was taken during the UGC meeting held on May 5. Currently, universities and colleges admit students in regular courses in July-August every year and the session starts in July-August in all higher education institutions in India and ends in May-June.
Last year, UGC had allowed students to enrol in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online mode twice during the academic year in January and July. Kumar said that last year's decision benefited about five lakh students. They did not have to wait for a year. They were able to join their degree courses in the beginning of the academic year itself.
He said, “After UGC allowed admission twice a year for Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online mode, as per the information given by higher education institutions on the UGC portal, a total of 19,73,056 students were admitted in July 2022 and an additional 4,28,854 students joined ODL and online courses in January 2023.” The UGC chairman said that in view of this excellent result, the council has decided to allow admission twice a year (January-February and July-August) for regular courses as well.
Kumar said, 'Having university admissions twice a year will benefit those students whose 12th board results were declared late or who could not appear in the exam due to health or personal problems. With twice the admission, the industry will come for campus placements twice a year, which will increase employment opportunities in the institute.
Kumar said that universities across the world are already following the biennial admission system. If Indian higher education institutions adopt the biennial admission process, our higher education institutions can increase their international collaboration and student exchange. This will improve our global competitiveness, and we will be at par with global educational standards.
