Pingali Venkaiah, who conceived the national flag, was born on 02 August 1878 in Bhatlapenumru of Machilipatnam in present-day Andhra Pradesh.

Venkaiah came in contact with Gandhiji during the freedom movement and in 1921 he designed the national flag of India which could unite all the countrymen. For this, Venkaiah studied all the flags of the world from 1916 to 1921. In 1931, the Indian National Congress added a white stripe and Dharma Chakra (Ashoka Chakra) to this flag and on 22 July 1947, it was chosen as the national flag.

– Pingali Venkaiah, the creator of the national flag Tricolour, a symbol of the country's integrity and self-respect, was a geologist. He was also a lecturer at Andhra Pradesh National College.

– During his youth, Pingali was sent to South Africa to fight as a soldier in the British Indian Army. There he was influenced by the spirit of nationalism.

– Pingali Venkaiah prepared many designs of the national flag to bind the people of the nation in the thread of unity. He also studied the flags of other countries in depth. In the meeting of the Indian National Congress in the year 1921, Mahatma Gandhi approved one of his designs. This design had green and red stripes and Gandhiji's spinning wheel in the middle. On Gandhiji's suggestion, he included a white strip in the flag.

– Pingali's flag was used unofficially in Congress meetings from 1921 to 1931.

– The Indian National Congress formally recognized the three-color tricolor in the 1931 session. It had saffron, white and green colors.

– On July 4, 1963, Shri Venkaiah said goodbye to the world.

– The Government of India had issued a postage stamp in his memory in 2009. This time too the central government has decided to issue a postage stamp in his honour.

– In 2014, the Vijayawada station of All India Radio was named after him.
