Dr. Radha Charan Gupta, an internationally renowned mathematician of Vedic Mathematics from Jhansi, passed away at the age of 90 after a prolonged illness. He left behind a significant legacy of research and compilations on the history of Vedic Mathematics for future generations.
Dr. Gupta was awarded the prestigious 'Kenneth O. May' Prize by the International Commission on the History of Mathematics in 2009 for his research on the history of mathematics. This award is regarded in India as equivalent of the Nobel Prize in mathematics.
After retirement, Dr. Gupta resided in Rasbahar Colony, located in the Sipri Bazar area of Jhansi. In 2023, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri.
Bundelkhand University and the city of Jhansi mourned the passing of Dr. Radha Charan Gupta. In his condolence message, Vice Chancellor Professor Mukesh Kumar Pandey stated that Dr. Gupta was a distinguished mathematician who greatly enriched the history of Vedic Mathematics through his dedicated research.
A research center has been established in his name at Bundelkhand University to honor his works and contributions to Vedic Mathematics.
Professor Avnish Kumar of the Mathematics Department expressed that Dr. Radha Charan Gupta's passing is a significant loss to the field of mathematics.
Dr. Gupta dedicated his entire life to advancing Vedic Mathematics through his extensive research and publications. He was awarded a fellowship by the National Academy of Sciences in 1991 and was elected President of the Mathematics Teachers Association of India in 1994.
IIT Bombay published the book Ganitanand in 2015, featuring Dr. Radha Charan Gupta's articles on the history of Vedic Mathematics. NCERT Delhi also published two of his books: Ancient Indian Mathematics and Historical and Cultural Glimpses of Medieval Indian Mathematics.
