The Delhi University (DU) on Monday accused St Stephen's College of exceeding the approved quota for Christian candidates in its revised seat allotment list and leaving some seats vacant in various BA courses despite candidates meeting the required criteria based on the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) marks. In a public notice regarding the announcement of allotments for Christian candidates at the Christian minority college, the university said that during the first stage of verification of the list sent by St Stephen's College, DU identified certain “critical and worrisome aspects” due to which it could not proceed with the allotment.
In the notice, DU alleged that in some popular courses like BSc (Hons) Chemistry and BSc (Hons) Physics, seats have been left vacant despite there being enough CUET-qualified candidates for both the courses.
There has been no immediate response from St Stephen's College Principal John Varghese on the allegations.
According to the notice, the college had sent the course-wise list of candidates selected for admission to Delhi University on August 28.
“While verifying the list submitted by St Stephen's College, the university identified certain critical and worrying aspects due to which the list could not be proceeded for allotment. An immediate clarification has been sought from the college,” the notice said.
DU said the principal of St Stephen's College has taken cognizance of the anomalies pointed out. DU said the preliminary list sent by the college did not give any specific details of BA course combinations, due to which the university could not allot seats to candidates.
The notice said the college revised the list and it was received by DU on August 31. DU said it is verifying the latest list sent by the college.
