The University of Delhi (DU) has increased the passing marks criteria for promotion to the next class in all its undergraduate courses from 50 per cent marks to 63 per cent, officials said. With this, students pursuing undergraduate studies in all DU colleges will now have to score 63 per cent marks in aggregate in the first and second semesters to get promoted. However, students representing Delhi University in sports, extra-curricular activities, National Cadet Corps (NCC), and National Service Scheme (NSS) can be exempted from the criteria after approval of the competent authority of their college.
The step has been taken to address the shortcomings in the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022 in Delhi University, a university official said.
He said, “Under the previous rules of passing and promotion, students securing 50 per cent marks in the first and second semester exams were promoted to the second year of the syllabus. The student had to pass seven papers and earn a total of 22 credits.
“However, since all papers do not have equal credits under NEP-UGCF 2022, it is possible that a student may get promoted to the next year by passing only three papers of both semesters and one common elective with only 36 per cent marks,” a member of the committee that framed the promotion guidelines told PTI.
To review this, a 12-member committee comprising principals of several DU colleges, including Miranda House, Kirori Mal College and Lady Shri Ram, and deans, academics and controller of examinations (CoE) held a meeting on May 7 and gave its recommendations, the official said. These recommendations were later approved by DU Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh on May 28, he said. The committee said that the bottlenecks in implementing NEP-UGCF 2022 are harming the academic growth of students and pushing back the goals set in NEP 2020. The committee reached a consensus that the passing marks and promotion rules should be reviewed. The committee suggested that students should meet the academic requirement of 50 per cent to be eligible for promotion to the next year. The committee member also said that to move to the next year, a student should obtain at least 28 credits, which was 22 credits earlier.
