Studying in IIT is the dream of many people. Every year lakhs of students appear for JEE exam and want to take admission in 23 IITs of the country. Indian Institute of Technology is giving admission to the reserved category at lower cut-off and along with this the fees for them has also been reduced.
According to PTI report, IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti said that in JEE-based admission, fee waiver and fee relaxation is provided from the application stage itself. At the application stage, students belonging to SC, ST, PWD (Persons with Disabilities) categories are required to pay only half of the examination fees. Apart from this, relaxation in cut-off has been given to increase the number of admissions in SC, ST, PWD and OBC categories.
This year JEE Advanced examination was conducted by IIT Madras.
He also said that currently there are 23 IITs and as per the Ministry of Education, several initiatives have been taken to focus on providing support to students from deprived sections of the society. Apart from these, some IITs also take additional measures individually, he said.
He said that in order to benefit a greater number of students from the high quality education provided by the IITs, SC, ST students who score less than the relaxation in the selection cut-off will be given special admission through preparatory courses. Training is given, which enables them to join IITs directly after completing the preparatory course.
A multilingual call center was also set up to answer candidates' queries. It was introduced this year to handle cases (those who attempted at least one payment) having last-minute technical glitches.
During the admission process, all eligible candidates are required to deposit the seat acceptance fee to demonstrate their commitment to securing the seat. SC, ST and PWD students have to pay only 50% of the fees compared to regular candidates. Kamakoti said that earlier, without this fee, many students had blocked seats but were not able to attend classes, leaving many seats vacant.
Kamakoti said, “Since seats reserved for SC and ST can be allotted only to candidates belonging to those categories, the vacancy of an SC or ST seat does not deny any other eligible candidate from the reserved category the opportunity to attend IIT .
He further said that if the parental income of a student is less than Rs 1 lakh, all 23 IITs will waive the entire tuition fee regardless of category. Additionally, full tuition waiver is provided to students belonging to SC, ST and PWD categories. Additionally, two-thirds of the tuition fees for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) students whose parents' income is between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh has been waived.
