Not a single medical graduate has come out of White Medical College of Punjab in the last 13 years. This medical college located in Pathankot was established in the year 2021. Earlier it was known as Chintpurni Medical College. There are 150 MBBS seats here but due to poor infrastructure and lack of faculty, no batch could pass out from here in 13 years. Earlier this year, after the direction of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the National Medical Commission (NMC) had asked all the students of this college to shift to another college. Let us tell you that NMC monitors the quality of medical education in the country. This medical is one of the two medical colleges in the country which the court ordered to shift the entire MBBS batch to another medical college due to not meeting the standards. The second college is GR Medical College of Karnataka. Chitpurni College has challenged the court order, while GR Medical College has transferred all the students to another medical college.

According to the Indian Express report, Chitpurni College has made such mistakes earlier as well. In 2017 also, students of three batches (who got admission in 2011, 2014 and 2016) had approached the court and got themselves transferred to other medical colleges.

In August last year, the NMC barred 9 medical colleges from taking admissions. These colleges did not meet the conditions and standards set by the NMC. Their faculty attendance was low on the NMC portal. Except for the medical colleges of Chintapurni and Karnataka, other medical colleges completed their deficiencies and were allowed to take admissions. But the medical colleges of Chintapurni and Karnataka failed to do so. According to the Indian Express report, the NMC has barred Chitpurni College from taking new admissions earlier as well. Since its establishment in 2011, the college has been allowed to start only five new batches so far. In view of the exit of three batches in 2017 and the ban on new admissions in 2011, 2014, 2016, 2021 and 2022, only two batches (those admitted in 2021 and 2022) are currently on campus. These students have also approached the court seeking transfer from the college.

Last year, on the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the NMC had constituted a committee to look into the Chitpurni Medical College case. This committee comprised members of the NMC, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (to which the college is affiliated) and representatives of the Medical Education Department of Punjab. After discussions, this committee had proposed to close the medical college.

During the NMC inspection at Chintapurni Medical College, the investigators found that only 12.6 per cent of the hospital beds were occupied by patients, while the rest were vacant. Whereas according to NMC norms, at least 60 per cent of the beds must always be occupied by patients.
