UGC NET score can be used by students for admission to PhD degree courses in lieu of entrance examinations conducted by various universities and higher educational institutions. University Grants Commission (UGC) gave this information on Wednesday. UGC also informed that candidates qualifying in Categories 2 and 3 will be given 70 weightage for test score and 30 weightage for interview for admission to Ph.D. UGC Secretary Professor Manish R Joshi said that a national entrance test for PhD will help the students. After this decision of UGC, students will no longer be required to appear in multiple PhD entrance examinations conducted by various institutes.

Students will be divided into these three categories on the basis of performance in UGC NET exam. UGC NET students will be eligible in the following 3 categories-
Category 1 will include those candidates who will be eligible for all three, admission in PhD, JRF and appointment as Assistant Professor.
Category 2 will include those candidates who will be eligible for admission to PhD and appointment as Assistant Professor.
Candidates falling in Category 3 will only be eligible for admission to Ph.D.

Opportunity to become a professor without doing UGC NET and PhD, bumper recruitment in the famous university of Delhi.

Till now UGC NET examination has been conducted for Junior Professor Fellowship and Assistant Professor in universities and other higher education institutions across the country. But after the above decision of UGC, now PhD admissions in various universities will also be based on UGC NET score. For PhD admission, the NET scores obtained by the candidates in Categories 2 and 3 will be valid for a period of one year.

UGC Secretary Professor Manish R Joshi said that a national entrance test for PhD will help the students. As part of the process of implementing the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), an expert committee was constituted to review the provisions of the National Eligibility Test (NET).

Decision after committee recommendation
Based on the recommendations of the committee in its meeting held on March 13, 2024, it was decided that from the academic year 2024-2025, students can use NET score to get admission in Ph.D. The result of NET will be declared in percentage along with the marks obtained by the candidate for use of marks for admission to Ph.D. Under the PhD Regulations 2022, JRF qualified students are given admission to PhD on the basis of interview.

Students will turn towards UGC NET
Many universities of the country and state are not able to conduct PhD entrance examination on time. There are many universities where examinations are not being conducted in two to three years. After this arrangement of UGC, students will get the option to get admission in JRF, NET and PhD through the same test twice a year. In such a situation, students across the country will turn towards UGC NET. This will be like the National Entrance Test for PhD. Also, the university will be freed from the hassle of conducting PhD entrance examination.

Presently this is the arrangement of UGC NET
Currently there are two categories in UGC NET. The first is eligible for the appointment of JRF and Assistant Professor while the second is eligible for the appointment of only Assistant Professor. In JRF, students also get fellowship for five years along with admission to Ph.D. Universities still give preference for admission to PhD to students who have passed JRF and NET, but those who have not passed these have to wait for the PhD entrance examination of the concerned university.
