UGC has announced that if seats for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses remain vacant through CUET scores, central universities can conduct their own entrance exams or admit students based on marks in qualifying exams. UGC said that keeping seats vacant for the entire academic year is not only a waste of resources but also deprives many students who want to pursue higher studies in central universities of quality higher education. However, the University Grants Commission (UGC) made it clear that the marks of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) will remain the main criteria for admitting students.
UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar on Thursday said, “It has come to the notice of the UGC that seats remain vacant in some central universities even after three or four rounds of counselling. Keeping seats vacant for the entire academic year is not only a waste of resources but also deprives many students who aspire to pursue higher education in central universities of quality higher education.” He said, “In such a situation, the SOP has been prepared to facilitate central universities to fill their vacant seats. Students who have appeared in CUET but may or may not have applied for courses in the concerned university earlier can also be considered.”
The Commission has recommended that students who appeared in CUET may also be considered for admission in subjects in which they had not appeared in the domain subject papers.
CUET: Speed in applications for admission in BHU, site opened for filling subject preference, NTA will send the list
He said, 'The university can relax the domain subject specific criteria for admission to a particular course. If seats remain vacant even after the list of applicants appearing in CUET is exhausted, the university can consider conducting an entrance exam at its own level or the concerned department can conduct a screening test. Kumar said, “The university can also admit students on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying exam. The entire admission process should be based on merit and transparency. In all cases, reservation roster will be applicable for admission to courses/programmes.”
